About the Band

Doggerland is a folk-pop collective of musicians from across the U.S. whose physical distance only increased during the pandemic. They come together to play the music of singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist team Dave Kopperman and Katherine Paterson. The players are Noah Baerman, Matt Bernstein, Johnnie Gilmore, Mel Hsu, Lilly Lane, Nate Mondschein, and Kate Ten Eyck. Inspired by artists such as Paul McCartney and Joni Mitchell, Kopperman and Paterson write simple lyrics to marry complex themes with catchy melodies. Taking their name from the once thriving, now sunken land, their music navigates the waters that divide us and redraws connections that were thought lost.

On their debut EP, Doggerland embraces opposites – loss and recovery, acoustic and electric, concrete and symbolic. Always sincere, and, sometimes, petty, the open-hearted and ironic songs of Dave Kopperman and Katherine Paterson dither between preserving the afterimage of what was lost or instead trying to move past into something new and unknown. Doggerland’s emphasis on collaboration extends to the arrangements and instrumentation, with the band weaving in an organic synthesis of folk, rock, jazz, and more, with spontaneity and purpose. Described as “firing on all cylinders,” the band’s sound is anchored by Paterson’s powerfully emotive vocals, blended with Dave’s plainspoken baritone (with the band in rich harmony). This EP attempts to reconcile antediluvian nostalgia with sobering self-awareness, a Noah’s ark of castaways… all aboard!
